How to Solve SpudGun Fuel Crisis

Several versions of the spray-on the antiperspirant contain propane?or at least they did. A few days ago, however, I went to four different ammo shops (i.e. drug stores), reading Right Guard labels, and didn't find a single one with propane. More research discovered four facts. One, Right Guard stopped using propane several months ago. Two, we're regrettably late to this story. Three, Right Guard now contains butane, which will also work, according to our spudgun consultants. Four—and this is the most important part—Brut antiperspirant does have propane! Live testing revealed that a russet shot through a 3-ft. barrel, powered by the explosive action of Brut sprayed for about one second into the combustion chamber will travel, well, really far. And be accompanied by a big boom.

Some useful advice regarding spudgun fuels

Combustion spudguns are powered by flammable propellants. If you are using a combustion spud fun, you would need fuel to power it and to launch your potato right there in to the orbit. Though there are plenty of fuel choices to make, you must be careful as your choice of fuel can make a difference between successful and safe launches and missed strikes, singed scalps, and burnt eyebrows and faces.

Here are some of the fuels that are commonly used to power combustion spudguns.

Right guard- it’s clean, powerful, and good stuff to power your combustion spudgun

Glade air freshner-it comprises of propane, butane, and isobutane. This propellant is powerful but contains large amount of water and smells quite bad

Butane-this too is a clean, powerful fuel for spudguns. The only drawback is that is that it is difficult to measure it and get the right amount.

Propane-it burns cleanly, is powerful and reliable too. You can measure it accurately using a propane meter.

Cologne, hairspray, and deodorant-all of these are decent choices to power your spud gun. The best part is that these are readily available. The drawback is that you can’t measure the quantity for good ignition. Plus, hair sprays and deodorants gum up inside the gun chamber and are smelly too.

When adding fuel to the spudgun, always remember that too much fuel in the spud gun chamber is not good. You won’t get enough oxygen to ignite the fuel mixture. Less fuel on the other hand would make your potato gun shoot farther. Experiment with different quantities of fuel to get it right. Last but not the least, use safe fuels to enhance your fun.

Learn to make your own combustion potato gun

Although spud guns and potato guns are readily available in the market and also at online stores, if you want you can make your own spud gun. Making spud gun is quite easy and doesn’t require you to possess any rocket science. Plus, the materials are readily available and that too at affordable rates. Spud gun materials cost roughly $25-30 and you can easily make your gun over the weekend.

Read on to learn how you can make combustion potato gun all on your own.

You would need some materials for making the combustion spud gun.

PVC coupling 4 inches
PVC cleanout with plug 4 inches
PVC pipe SCH 40, 4" X 1.5'
PVC reducer coupling 2-4 inches
BBQ igniter
Nails
PVC primer and cement
Hammer
Saw
Once you have all the material, you can start the production process.
You may begin by cutting the PVC pipes with the help of a hack saw to the appropriate lengths.
Make sure that the pipes are clean. Now hammer two nails across the PVC pipe and wrap the stripped ends of the igniter wire just beneath the head of the nail. The points of the nails must be about ¼ inches away from one another inside the pipe.
Push the igniter button. You would see a spark inside the pipe.
Apply PVC primer and then PVC cement to the ends of the pipes for cementing the pipes together. Leave it for drying for a day before you set out for spud gun shooting.
Put a potato with a stick down to the end of the barrel of your spud gun. Spray an aerosol like hairspray or deodorant into the back chamber. Your combustion spud gun is ready to fire.

Learn to load the potato gun in 5 easy steps

Spud gun or potato canon as it is popularly called is highly addictive sport. Just fire out few potatoes out of a blaster once and you would want to do it over and over again. This outdoor sport promises lot of fun and amusement.

If you have never tried this before, learn how to load the potato cannon in 5 easy steps. Following safety precautions is paramount to prevent any accident and injury from this amusing, but dangerous sport.

  1. Never ever load your potato cannon if you don’t intend to use it immediately. A loaded spud gun is very dangerous. The trigger can be pressed accidentally, causing immense loss of life, livestock, and assets. Identify a target first and then load your spud gun.

  1. Now get a potato and fix it down the barrel of the spud gun. You can use a broom or a pole to wedge the potato down the barrel. Make sure that the potato fits in tightly in the barrel. If the edges of the potato are trimmed off when you put it in, you can rest assured that it is fixed properly.

  1. Ideally you must load the potato cannon with potatoes but you can use other things as well. Just make sure that the thing you choose for loading your potato cannon is smaller than the bore of the gun.

  1. Before you load your spud gun, stuff a wet rag down the barrel. It would form a tight seal and would ensure that pressure doesn’t escape around the object-keeping the object in place.

  1. Once loaded, shoot your spud gun in right temperature. It shouldn’t be too hot or too cold as PVC pipe can get brittle and may break down, causing safety hazards.

Troubleshooting your spud gun

Potato gun has become one of the most cherished outdoor sports nowadays. A lot of youngsters and even those who are middle aged indulge in this cool sport over the weekends. As well as promising lot of fun, spud gun allows one to put their skill and endurance to test.

If you and your friends have planned to for spud gun this weekend, make sure your potato gun is all set ready. To avoid the disappointment as well as embarrassment in front of others due to a non-performing potato gun, check out the following things before you leave home.

Check all the connections. If any wire is loose, the spark may not travel through the wires and this may prevent your spud gun to work.

Do remember to clean your spud gun after every shot. Every time you fire, a lot of hairspray is left in the chamber of the gun. If it is allowed to remain there, it would harden and would prevent your gun from making the spark. Further, if you do not clean your gun, the cap may also get stuck.

Do not wait for too long to fire. After you spray the hairspray in the chamber, fire the spud gun immediately otherwise the fumes will condense-leaving a sticky glob like thing in the gun chamber.

Check the seal around the projectile. It must fit tightly in the barrel otherwise the spud gun would not work.

In case your potato gun doesn’t work, you know how to troubleshoot it. Fix the things and get ready for a fun-filled potato gun shooting experience next time.

Safety tips for using potato gun

Spud Gun
A potato gun, also called a spud gun, a spud zooka, potato launcher or spud launcher, is a wonderful device that is enjoying a lot of popularity these days. More and more people are buying potato guns to enjoy the fun and adventure that they promise. However, these guns are quite serious than what may be deciphered from their names. Improper handling and usage can result in serious injuries or even death in some unfortunate events.
Here are some safety tips and precautions that you must follow before using the potato guns
Never point your loaded spud gun at any animal or vehicle or building as it can prove as dangerous as a conventional firearm.
You must avoid looking down the barrel or the chamber of the spud gun, especially when the gun is fully loaded.
Do not put away loaded spud guns as they can be pressed accidentally-resulting in a serious mishap.
Shoot spud guns in open spaces where potatoes would hit the ground and not any person or animal or building.
It is not safe to use the potato gun in extreme cold weather or hot weather conditions. In extremely cold weather, the PVC pipe of the gun becomes fragile and tends to break down easily. In hot weather, the solvent that binds the spud gun together softens and causes the gun to fall apart. A mild temperature is ideal and safe for enjoying potato gun.
Spud guns that are made using non pressure rated PV pipes are more likely to explode and hence prove dangerous. Use only pressure rated PVC pipes for safe potato gun experience.
Whether you are making your own potato gun or you are buying one, make sure that the gun is made using good quality solvent, has proper chamber to barrel size ration, and makes use of hairspray as a propellant as acetylene, hydrogen and other high powered fuels are dangerous.
Keep the safety precautions in mind and have a great potato gun experience!
